The film of Django playing ‘J’attendrai’ is a valuable resource, I am sure someone will tell me otherwise but I don’t know of any other film of Django playing. In the film you can see very clearly how his left hand fretted chords and single line notes. I first saw some of the clip on the excellent DVD on the life of Stephane Grapelli. I then saw a longer version on YouTube with the rather mysterious voiceover whilst Django plays a little of the tune and the rhythm section smoke and play cards - what was all that about I thought?
All is now revealed because Michael Dregni has put the whole film on YouTube and it makes a lot more sense when you see the orchestra part at the beginning. In fact it is a rather good educational film about jazz which could still be useful today. Michael also gives a great description of its original purpose and how the film was found after many year.
