Hi
I stumbled upon this site. Excellent reading.
I'm a new convert to the 'gypsy sound' - although have always loved listening to the occasional Django track.
Via youtube I came across 'Romane' and also Joscho Stephan whilst I was researching something else, and now have listened to just about everything I can get hold off.

I'd love a 'gypsy guitar' but for now will have to make do with my Taylor 612 to practice on, I'm just trying to get to grips with the 'rest stroke style of playing - having always been a strictly 'alternate picking' player on most of my playing.

I didn't really understand - 10- 13 guage strings ! - Do you guys always use 11? I'm using 13-56 is that wrong ??

Well we haven't tried the Fishman Rare Earth magnetic soundhole pickups but there might be two reasons why these might not be useful. Firstly our D hole guitars have huge sound holes and I don't think the pickups would fit the holes without specially-made extension brackets. Secondly the sound of a magnetic pickup takes it towards an electric guitar sound when we are aiming for a pure acoustic sound - still I'm sure they are useful for some situations.

I use the microphone and clip on my CLASSICAL guitar, with the microphone inside the sound hole and it seems to work fine, as long as you keep the cord out of the way.

The problem I have is that it fell on the floor one night and someone unceremoniously stepped on the clip, breaking the clip part. So now I use a rubber band and a special piece of plastic I carved to hold the thing together. It works, though.

Threre doesn't seem to be a way to reorder it from Audio-Technica.

I'm working on getting some of my transcriptions into Powertab. I have "LaGitane," as a powertab file. If anybody wants a copy, email me thru my band's site, and I'll email it to you. BTW, Wrembel's "Getting into Gypsy Jazz Guitar," is worth getting, [I'm not saying it just because he's a friend!] Also, most important is to learn to do a good "Pompe." If you don't have that, nothing else will really make sense or matter!

Cheers,
Barry

Simon,
You may want to look into the "Amazing Slowdowner" if you haven't already. I use this quite a bit as it lets me change the speed of anyone—Django, Romane, Stochelo—to a speed where I'm comfortable. Not only does it allow for accurate playing but the song can be slowed down to the point where it's possible to figure out, note-for-note, a solo you might be interested in learning. (This slowing down doesn't affect the pitch, but you can change pitch if you wish).

I just finished working out Django's version of Si Tu Savais and I found it to be a very rewarding experience. I'm not up to full tempo yet, but working through it and some other songs really helps my phrasing and ears. I agree that many playalongs can be very intimidating to players who aren't fully up to speed yet.

Just my .02.
And I really dig the blog.
Keep swingin!

I used the DG-320 on a full (two sets each of 65 minutes) gig last night and it worked very well. The slightly lower action than my particular DG-300 meant that my left hand got a lot less tired towards the end of the evening. It is a significantly louder overall than the DG-300 and I only had to use a tiny amount of amplification in a room that would seat 70 people. Phil Johnson, who was playing the snare drum last night, said it sounded louder than his drum! The rest of the band liked the sound so it looks as though it will become my first choice rhythm guitar.

Hi Simon,

Found this website when looking for additional Lollo Meier news, a great musician, I've had the pleasure of meeting him and his wife a few times. Are you familiar with All About Jazz? http://www.allaboutjazz.com
There's plenty of room for your band/music in there too and you can make use of various services for free. Will also add you to my Mizar 5 site, also wordpress :-)
best,
Gina
